Countdown's on...

So I'll be leaving on Saturday evening to Basel!! I have a train on Sunday morning at 5.16 in Basel Bd Bhf, I still don't know how to get there at that time as the first train from Basel SBB leaves at 7.24h, but I'll figure that out :)

As my future room mate will be at this famous conference I'm missing and won't be there to let me get into the apartment, I just got an email from my sweet Newie Buddy telling me, that I'll stay with her and her Mum until the 3rd of August. That's sweet!

Oh, and she told me that as my TN manager will be on a conference in Moscow, she's going to meet me during my time at Moscow airport, that's cool. Especially in case I miss my correspondance flight ;-)

I already have a full program: I arrive on Monday morning, Monday afternoon I'll already meet the director of the company and start working on Tuesday morning!!
Probably because I have two weeks less to work and there will be quite a lot to do!!

Countdown's running...

Flight booked!!!

So I finally got a flight booked!!! Yiiipppiiiieeeehhh!!! So maybe I'll honestly arrive there one day :-))

Official dates: 30.7.06 to 22.10.06

Well, not at all the 24.7 - 3.11 that were agreed for with the company, but anyway!
I'll arrive on Monday at 5.40 in the morning, we'll see if someone'll get up to pick me up ;-), and I'll get back the 22.10 at 14.oo to Frankfurt.

I guess all of this including the visa was just to let me know that I should be there at the beginning of University, 23.10.06, right ;-)

Part II: Ups and Downs or going to Russia - easy peasy - It's not over yet!!

Don't even think about it!! It's not over!! I can not even be angry or anything anymore, I start laughing about it, it just seems all like a joke...
I got my invitation yesterday, and wanted to book a flight for Wednesday with another company. My plan was (of course I still don't have a visa):
Go to the Consulate at 9 am, get my visa at 1pm, get on the train to Basel at 3 pm, get on the train to Frankfurt at 6 pm, arrive at the airport at 9pm and take a flight at midnight. Arrive in Novosibirsk at 5 pm the next day and get on the bus to Altai Mountains, rafting and fun at 8 pm.
Sounded like stress, but would have been ok.
So yesterday I called the post at 7.40 am to find out at what time they'll bring the invitation. Between 3 and 4 pm, of course the guy arrived at 3.50 pm. More than half of the afternoon over. Go to the post office to change my adress during my stay, go to a travel agency just to find out, that it's much cheaper if I book on the internet (difference of German and Swiss tariffs of travel agencies) and arrive at home at 6.20 pm. Find my flight, try to book - at 6.50 pm I find out that I cannot book the student tariff as I don't have this stupid international student card!!!! Too late to ask the agency, bookings have to be made two days before. Here we go, deception again.
I get used to the idea that I'll miss the conference. Well, if someone up there doesn't want me to go rafting, it will be for a reason. Anyway.
So last night I decide to analyze this famous invitation a bit closer - and see the dates: 24.07.06 - 24.10.06
I look again: yes, that's written. So today I write an email to my TN manager to ask whether this means what I think: a three months invitation. And guess what: yes, it does!!!
She told me that she didn't ask for the invitation herself but let someone else do it, and apparently that person made a mistake!! Wait until I find him/her! :)
Consequences:
  1. I have to leave two weeks earlier than was planned and discussed with the company. :-(
  2. I will be homeless for more than a week as I rented my apartment until beginning of November (special thanks to Sarah who already proposed me to stay at her place :-))
  3. As this invitation counts for a visa for three months, a faxed or scanned copy would have been enough to obtain the visa: meaning I could have had my visa last Wednesday and could have left yesterday with the flight I wanted to!!!!!!!
I got the proposal of just getting there without return ticket and to arrange things over there. Would be ok. The point is that a single ticket costs only 20 Euros less than an aller - retour ticket, and I neither have the money, nor the (great German word) 'Bock' to go there without return ticket and pay the double. So I'll leave two weeks earlier.
Lucky as I am they won't let me enter the country because of that because they think I'm either a spy or want to get married for the passport and don't plan to ever return ;-)) lol
I can already see the scene: I arrive in Moscow, and they won't let me pass on because I'm German and have a visa from Switzerland and I have
to go all the way back :-) Or I won't get my transit flight because I will queue for about three hours :)
Nothing seems impossible anymore!!! lol

What to spend on

Does anyone want to know what I did with the money that was supposed to be for my visa on Friday? No? I'll tell you anyway:

I bought 4 pairs of shoes and 3 tops!!! Not that I don't have already 33 pairs of shoes in Geneva (yes, I counted them today - see how depressed I am :-)) and about 20 pairs still in Germany. Which makes an amazing total of 37 shoes here in Geneva. Not bad, hein??
To buy shoes just makes me feel better. You can just wear any kind of shoes and they fit, it's so easy to find, not like clothes where the same size is different in any store :)

I guess these are the two only kind of girlie things I like, shoes and handbags. I didn't buy a handbag though, I already bought two in Berlin;-)
Well, the advantage of not flying on Monday is that I have a whole week to start writing about Berlin, I couldn't get the motivation yet as there is much to tell, Pleiten, Pech und Pannen quoi! :)

I actually can't believe I am writing a post like this, this is so not me, I guess I spent too much time with Carissa yesterday... ONLY KIDDING!! :) I really enjoyed the afternoon, first sushi, then ice cream in Paquis and then we both went up the Cathedral for the first time!! Here some proof :-)

Ups and Downs or going to Russia - easy peasy

Ok ok. As I could have imagined before, I will NOT be able to leave on Monday. It's so damn easy to go to Russia, believe me.
First you need the invitation.

"Official invitation from an organization authorized to invite business visitors to Russia.
The Invitation to Russia must be from the Russian Foreign Ministry or its regional representatives; The Ministry of Interior or its local offices. The letter must contain: official seal and legal address of the agency, signature and name of official authorized to invite foreigners to Russia. The Embassy reserves the right to request the original invitation."
If you want to go for more than 3 months (in my case 14 weeks), you need a visa for 6 months and the original invitation, a scanned or faxed copy is not enough, plus of course the HIV test.
First I was told, the invitation needs 3 to 4 weeks. Then I was told 7 to 15 days. Luckily I never booked a flight until now... I wanted to leave this Monday, but two weeks ago got the email, that the invitation won't arrive before the 24th of July, then still had to be send, making this impossible.
Oh, but I shouldn't forget: if you ask for this invitation, you already have to say WHERE you do your visa demand. As I am German but still have a Swiss permit, I thought: maybe I'd be able to do it in Switzerland, but was told: you're German, you should do it in Germany. As I thought that it wouldn't need more than 7 to 15 days after my last information, I said: ok then, I'll make the visa demand in the Embassy in Berlin as I will be there for one week.
Of course, the invitation didn't arrive in time. So when in Berlin I decided to go to the Embassy. Great experience. You stand with several persons in front of a large iron cellar door. All five minutes a guy will come, take your passport and leave with it, coming back ten minutes later letting you in. They have their own little prison. I forgot, you cannot enter the Embassy, just the consulate, with three policemen in front, wishing you good luck if you don't speak Russian fluently. True, the guy doesn't speak a word German. When you come in, you have to pass a security check, same as in any airport, plus rechecking your handbag. After the check, you have to wait in front of another big iron door, which will be opened by button when they see you with their camera. You go up the stairs, and then get into two rooms: 10 counters, about 60 people waiting in that room, all Russians, plus of course two other (this time Russian) policemen. Noone speaks German. Everything is written in Russian. You have to get a number like in the post office, but if you ask, noone will tell you where to get that damn number from, the people behind the counter won't talk to you if they haven't called your number and especially not if you don't even have one, but they speak in Russian anyway. I was in there for about 45 minutes, feeling completely out of place, looking everywhere if I could at least understand one of the pannels, to know where to go (of course every counter is for something else). The only pannel in German said 'Nur für Reisebüros', the guy spoke German, but not with me as apparently I am not a travel agency!
After 45 minutes I left completely disappointed, as I only wanted to ask whether I have to return to Berlin to make my visa demand as is written on the invitation.
So I decided to go to the General Consulate in Geneva when I am back.
On Monday morning, the great surprise: an sms telling me that I'll be able to go to the international conference starting on the 26th, as my invitation already arrived one week earlier and would only need 2 days until arriving here!! You cannot imagine my happiness!!
On Wednesday morning I went to the Consulate here in Geneva, kind of same procedure, about 15 people waiting in front of a door, a guy coming and letting three persons in at a time, but even without passport or security check. After two hours waiting, it was finally my term to enter. Here, as we're in Geneva (Berlin is maybe not THAT international as Geneva ;-)), everything was written in French or English, I can't remember, but at least I could understand it, except at the counter for Russian citizens. The guy was really nice, and guess what: he will give me a visa even if Berlin is written on the invitation as I have a Swiss permit!! He just told me to be there early in the morning so that the visa would have been finished at around noon today, so that I can take the flight (as I already wanted to a month ago), this Monday. I was sooo happy, I thought that everything would be cool now, invitation, visa, easy peasy. But, careful as I am, I decided not to book a flight before not having the invitation in my hands, as I should have on Wednesday.
Today we're Friday, I still haven't got it.
As my flight will go from Frankfurt, I cannot go to the consulate on Monday and be in Frankfurt on time. The next flight won't go before next Friday, at least I hope I will have my visa by then. Of course, everyone will be at this conference, rafting somewhere in the mountains, including my room mate, so we'll see how that works.
And now I will get a visa for 6 months, but in the end won't be able to stay longer than 3 months and already miss University...
Oh, and let me talk about the flight. I have a great choice: Either I take the company, who had the flight accident with 150 deads two weeks ago, or the company, which after an article from a Russian guy even the Russians prefer not to take. So?? Well, I decided to take the direct flight with the company that had an accident two weeks ago, how was the thing with the statistics:-) ?
As you can see, ups and downs, if you could imagine all the emotions I have already put into this Traineeship before arriving... I hope that at least it will be worth it...

YEAH!!!

I wouldn't have thought, but it seems that I'll be leaving on Monday!! My invitation was supposed to not come before the 24th of July, plus the time to send it, plus the time to get the visa... But I just got an sms telling me, that the invitation arrived, it'll be here in 2 days!!

Gosh, I haven't packed my stuff yet, and I still want to get more insight in HTML, Marketing and of course Russian!! Not even talking about my not yet booked flight, my apartment... Seems like I'm going to have a very very stressful week...

Wish me luck!!

Altai, I'm coming!!!!

The end of a dream

So we lost. It´s over. A whole country lost it´s hope. A whole country lost it´s illusion. A whole country lost it´s dream. To be fairplay I have to admit that we played crap, the Italians were better and I wondered, why they didn´t get it in earlier. Two minutes. Two freaking minutes and it was over. :-(
Third time we lose against them in a World Cup. Like France is Brazil´s, Italy is our "bête noire". Sigh.
At least I hope the French will make it tonight. What a nightmare if the Final was Portugal - Italy. I couldn´t support neither of them, they both kicked my favorit teams (Germany and England) out, and I never was quite into the "Drama Queen" Football anyway.
At least the weather in Zurich suits the mood... Cloudy and looking rainy.
Heading to Berlin in one hour. Thought, I would be more cheerful...
Let´s hope for the French... ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!!!

Allez les Bleus... and the 'Männschäft'

Writing les "bleus" really looks weird, doesn't it? Anyway, I guess noone doubts that I support Germany, refered to as "the Männschäft" by foreigners ;-), with all my heart, body and soul. They have to win against Italy tonight, once to revenge Frings (come on, the Argentinian said, he hasn't been hit) and second to break the chain of Germany losing against Italy in the World Cup, their famous 4-3 argument. Jetzt erst recht!!
But I still have to post about the bleus.

They as well have to kick Portugal out!! I always liked France, even if people usually tell me that being half German, half English I should and could not be for the French. Anyway. They played quite bad during the first games, but they really showed what they're about in the France - Brazil game. Brazil had no chance! We were watching the game and couldn't believe how they dominated throughout the whole game! And hey, what a great end it would be for Zidane's career being in the Final!! And of course Portugal kicked out my other favorit team, England!! I have to be for France!!
The perfect Final for me (even if very very West European): Germany - France
By the way, the guy that is going to take my apartment over summer is Brazilian, but spend the last week-end with his girlfriend in Paris - poor guy, being in France when they win against Brazil ;-)

So: 'Allez les bleus' and 'Qui ne saute parle pas français, hey' for France and 'Berlin, Berlin, wir fahren nach Berlin' and 'Wir werden Weltmeister, Weltmeister, Weltmeister sein' for Germany;-)

And promised: After this post I'll stop writing about football (well, maybe one more post after the Final, or maybe two ;-)), no matter whether we win or lose. I'll only write about the beautiful parties in Berlin;-)

Why Germany has to win the World Cup

Tomorrow I'll be heading to Zurich, on Wednesday to Berlin - to watch Germany in the Final!! At least I hope. The Italians might give us a hard time, especially after that stupid Spiegel article. I mean, they didn't denounce Frings of hitting an Argentinian after the game for nothing. Of course it is justified, but how funny, that the Italians noticed ;-) Kind of revenge, ey?

Well, I still think we can make it to the Final. Why? Everyone should know the 54 x 74 - 1990 = 2006 formula by now. But I played a bit with the years of when Germany and Brazil actually won the World Cup. And guess what: It seems like that Germany has to win :-)

But let me explain it:

Germany won in 1954 - Brazil in 1958 - 4 years later

Brazil won in 1970 -
Germany in 1974 - 4 years later

Germany won in 1990 - Brazil in 1994 - 4 years later

Brazil won in 2002 WHAT WOULD BE LOGICAL??? :-)

EXACTLY!!! - Germany in 2006

Brazil won in1962 as well and Germany didn't win the next World Cup, which kind of disturbs my theory, but the rest still makes sense.

I just love finding these kinds of patterns and theories, just ask my Political Science Assistant, he accused me of inventing conspiracy theories ;-)

Actually I thought I wouldn't post anything before going to Russia, but I think the World Cup is just too important for me to let it pass inaperçue... ;-)

Don't cry for yourself Argentina

Well, what can I say? What a match!! Never ever in my whole life a football game has been such a hell to watch and such a relief in the end! We have reached the semi finals!! Since the Germany-Poland match I was soo sure that we'll reach the Final, and what a hard half an hour to pass when we were 1-0 behind!! The disbelief that we could actually lose. And the happiness when we finally scored!!
Let's not even talk about the penalties. My legs are still shaking just thinking about it!!

What a team!! What a togehterness. Never would I have imagined such a unity!! What a support for Lehmann, the unknown German keeper!! And Kahn who brings the necessary support to make Lehman our new national hero of the week!! Que du bonheur!!

But of course there are always the two sides of the medal. The Argentinian fans badly insulting us at the Plaine de Plainpalais. Throwing stones. And this only because we scored one goal. We hadn't even won the penalties yet. The Argentinian players attacking the German players after the game. Honestly. It's football. I do understand that they're upset, I mean I had tears in my eyes when we won, I don't even want to imagine my sadness if we had lost. But from there to insulting and attacking? I know it is a passion, it is my passion as well. I love football!! But I would never ever insult or attack other fans. Why should I? They're not playing after all, they can't change anything.

Why do people begrudge us our victory? I know, penalties are the most unappreciative way to be kicked out, I agree. It sucks. But still.
People could try to understand that it means so much more than football to us. It is in our country. For once, Germany is one Nation. It is apparently the most effective way of integration of our immigrants I have ever seen ;-) For the first time since I don't know how many decades we feel a certain pride to be German. To have a great football team, that for once really knows how to play :) and sticks togehter. To be a good and friendly host country. We have flags everywhere!! Us Germans!!

This morning when I woke up, after having dreamt only about horrible football stories (who could have imagined that football occupies me that much), I was singing in my head:

'One way, or another, I'm gonna find you, I'm gonna get ya, get ya, get ya, get ya'

I cannot remember what the song's called or who sang it, but all I have to say is:

'One way, or another, Italia, we're gonna get ya get ya get ya get ya' !!! ;-)
